Southern Michigan Pain Consultant’s team extends beyond our physicians, physical therapists & behavioral medicine specialists. Our Physician’s Assistants and our Nurse Practitioner are available to help manage your treatment between visits with the physician. To put it simply, they are able to provide your doctor with another view of who you are as a patient and keep track of how you are responding to your treatment.

Thomas Ulrich, PA

Tom Ulrich attained his Bachelor of Arts, Psychology from Montclair State University (1983). He earned his Master of Divinity at Andrews University (1991). He then went on to complete an Associates in Applied Science in Nursing from Lake Michigan College (1994) and then earned his Master in Physician Assistant Studies at University of North Dakota (2006). He became interested in pain management while he was a nurse in oncology and surgery.

Matthew Kuiper, DO

Matthew Kuiper, DO

Dr. Kuiper is Board Certified in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He became Medical Director upon Dr. Charles Guernsey’s retirement. He completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He attended Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and he completed his residency in Anesthesia at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Dr. Kuiper has also participated in an Interventional Pain Management Fellowship at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Wild is Board Certified in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He completed a BS degree in Chemistry from Indiana University in Bloomington. In addition, he attended the Illinois Institute of Technology while continuing his education in Chemical Engineering. After working in that field for a short time Dr. Wild attended Wayne State University in Detroit earning his Doctor of Medicine. Since that time he has completed his Surgery Internship at the Detroit Medical Center, his Anesthesia Residency and his Fellowship in Chronic Pain Management at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.

Joel Bez, DO FAOCA

Joel Bez, DO FAOCA

Dr. Bez completed a BS in Biology at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. He then went on to attend Michigan State University where he earned his Doctor of Osteopathy. Following medical school, he completed his internship and residency at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Bez went on to complete his Acute and Chronic Pain Management Fellowship at MSU and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Erik Voogd, MD

Erik Voogd, MD

Erik Voogd, MD, is trained and experienced in the latest interventional pain management techniques and has board certifications in both Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. Dr. Voogd received his Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona. He received his Medical Degree from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.  Dr. Voogd then went on to complete his Anesthesiology Residency along with his Pain Medicine Fellowship at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, in Portsmouth, VA. As an Assistant Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences he has trained fellows, residents, interns, and medical students.  He also travels nationally and teaches advanced ultrasound and fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures for the Society of Pain Practice Management as a member of their faculty.  He has contributed to the advancement of interventional pain medicine authoring nationally and internationally peer-reviewed posters and presentations as well as chapters in pain medicine board review texts. Commander (Ret.) Voogd recently retired after 30 years of Naval service and has proudly served with the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, and the United States Army in support of Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom respectively.

Wisam George, DO

Wisam George, DO is trained and experienced in the latest interventional pain management techniques. He is a fulltime pain management physician with board certifications in both Pain Management and Anesthesiology. Dr. George received his Bachelor of Science in Biology at Wayne State University in Detroit. He received his Medical Degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Following medical school, Dr. George went on to complete his Anesthesiology Residency at Wayne State University Detroit Medical Center and his Pain Management Fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. George has been honored as Physician Partner of the Year at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital and received special recognition for his compassionate care. Dr. George offers a wide variety of different treatment options and finds great interest in radicular pain, spinal cord stimulation, DRG stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, and orthobiologics.
